What is menopause?

Menopause, by definition, is when a woman has not had a menstrual cycle for one year or more, but it is so much more than this for many women. Many women may start to have some signs and symptoms that their ovarian function is decreasing in their late 30s to 40s.

Menopause Symptoms

Examples of menopausal symptoms and indicators of inadequate ovarian hormone production include:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Weight gain (particularly around the abdomen)

In addition, many women will have sleep disturbances, decreased libido and facial hair growth. Some women will also experience symptoms of vaginal thinning, such as vaginal dryness or pain with intercourse. For some women, these symptoms may be mild and tolerable; however, for others, they may be debilitating and have a great effect on their quality of life.
